Visiting Minneapolis? Grab a Book
Perhaps not much of a surprise to the people that live here, but Minneapolis was chosen as America’s most literate city in 2007 based on a study from Central Connecticut State University.
In fact the Twin Cities is surrounded with a literate population with St. Paul coming in at third. Something definitely of which to be proud. While the study spoke of gains, there were losses as well.
As a whole, we read less. Settling in for the Sunday morning paper and a cup of joe is fast being replaced by other, perhaps online activities. We still value our libraries though. After all, there are many prominent people yet to be honored with an institution named after them.
I considered my own habits. Yes, I read the newspaper online. I do not subscribe. This is out of no disrespect for journalism. I relish the opportunity to read a paper when I’m having lunch alone. Rather, it’s an issue of being green, having to recycle all those newspapers.
As far as reading less, heavens no. I read books on my Visor. I read online a great deal. I have shelves and shelves of books that I can’t bear to part with and revisit on cold winter evenings. I purchase books just as much as I always have.
Perhaps I’m an anomaly. How about you? Have your reading habits changed? Photo by Mannequin
