Tech Tip Tuesday — How To Fix A Slow Computer
You have your idea. The words are flowing. You can’t type fast enough. Then, it happens. For some mysterious reason, your computer slows down. Today’s tech tip is how to prevent and fix a slow computer.
Nothing is more frustrating when you’re creating but to have your computer slow down. Been there. Done that. There are a few things you can do to prevent it. One reason that computers slow down is because the temp directory gets filled. As you surf or as you work, temp files are created. As this directory grows, your computer has an increasingly difficult time writing these files. Two things can help.
First, do regular maintenance. Schedule a weekly disk clean up and defrag. Both are Windows system tools. The disk clean up will remove temporary files, including Internet files as well as compress old files. If you do it regularly, the process takes less than a couple minutes.
If you’re like me, you like to try out new programs. Some I keep, others I uninstall. Over time, holes, if you will, are created in the file structure. Doing a defrag removes fragments to help your computer run more efficiently. A defrag process is a good one to start before going to bed. You will want to make sure that your screen saver is off. Anti-virus programs can also interupt a scan, though I haven’t found that an issue.
Second, as part of good computer maintenance, you’ll want to restart your computer regularly. I keep mine on all the time, so to make it gets restarted, I schedule it with a handy utility called WinOFF. I’ll often start back ups when I’m done for the day. I schedule a restart with WinOFF once those processes are complete.
Writing shouldn’t be frustrating, at least from a computer perspective. Fixing a slow computer before it happens can save you a lot of frustration.

You can also remove unwanted programs from startup with a utility built in to Windows called MSCONFIG.
Start>Run>MSCONFIG
Really helps speed up your login after your schduled reboots ; )
Thanks for the reminder! I used to use MSCONFIG with Windows 98, (yes, way back then), but it’s still a keeper.
