Tech Tip–Remote Access to Your Computer
Today’s tech tip is about saving you headaches. If you have more than one computer or just need to access your personal computer while at work, remote control software offers a good solution.
Recently, I purchased a new laptop. The prospect of moving files and reinstalling applications was daunting. To make matters worse, I had software installed on my old computer that I either misplaced or lost installation files and more importantly, license keys. Having remote access to this computer was important.
When you use remote control software, you want to make sure your access is secure. Always look for 256-bit encryption. Look into file sharing and management. If you’re likely to be working on documents on another computer, this feature will be of special interest.
My desktop is a bit of power hog. When I’m not using it, it is off. I actually did notice the savings on our electric bill. Anyway, software now has the ability to turn on and shutdown remote computers. You can get the job done, while saving energy. With remote control software, I don’t need to turn on the monitor. I have complete access on my remote computer.
Before purchasing, try it first. Make sure you have optimized transfer speed. Cable Internet or DSL provide powerful transfer speeds. You’ll realize the importance of this feature when you try and copy your first huge file.
Another useful feature is tech support. I can remotely troubleshoot problems I may be having with my computer. I can run high intensity tasks like virus scans remotely, so my computer time at home is not disrupted. If you have the need, remote control software can streamline your virtual day.

The ability you speak of to turn on the remote computer (or at least wake it from Sleep) was what finally sealed the deal for me. I had been eyeing remote access software from proxy Networks because I had used them at work and knew it worked well, I just could not bring myself to leave my PC on 24/7. Once I learned there was a solution for that, I went ahead and made the buy.
