Today’s tech tip is about being safe, safe at home, safe at the workplace. June is National Safety Month. It’s a good time to evaluate your home office to identify potential safety issues.

Take a look at your computer set up.
Lots of dangling cords, loose cords, cords to hardware that you no longer own behind your desk? For ease of cleaning and troubleshooting if an issue arises, organize cords on the back of your computer. Rubber bands or ties work well to tie up longer cords to manageable lengths.

Clean around your computer.
Dust building up around your desk is not only unhealthy, but poses risks for your computer and other hardware. Make it a part of your weekly routine to clean your desk area, especially around your computer. Hair and dust getting trapped in your computer shortens its lifespan. From a sanity perspective, preventing hardware failure is a must.

Keep your hardware plugged into a surge protector.
Storms can pop up any time. Make sure your most valuable piece of equipment, your computer, is protected against sudden power surges that could take out a power supply or a motherboard. Prevention is the best policy.

Home office workers face minimal risks. Taking the extra time to organize your workspace will not only save you time, but it can keep you safe.
