Today’s tech tip addresses a task every writer and everyone that uses a computer needs to do. Regular backups of your data whether it be your documents or even just your bookmarks will make your day sometime. It pays to do yourself that little favor.

Of course, backing up your data onto your hard drive is a start, but I think you can see the issue. If your hard drive crashes, your data crashes too. Sometimes data can be recovered from a failed hard drive, but not always. Your best option is a remote backup.

You can backup to a USB drive or onto a CD. You can then store them safely away. A even better option is to save your data remotely. The free part to the backups is to have your own domain and free software. A program I like to use is 2BrightSparks, SyncBack. It comes in a couple different flavors including a free version or a more robust pay version, depending on your needs.

I then schedule my backup to run during the wee hours of the morning after I’ve pried myself off the computer. The backup is uploaded to an empty directory, password-protected of course, on my domain. Just schedule it and forget it. Your data is safe and if the worse should happen and your hard drive dies, at least you can recover your documents.
