Why I Forgive Netflix

Yes, a lot of us were pissed at Netflix when they announced rate hikes. I was one of them. My cost was going up more than I wanted. Instead, I decided to opt for a streaming only account. Good decision!

As it was, I was getting one down from four discs a month. Unfortunately, with streaming, I just wasn’t watching them. They hung around for weeks before either I just sent them back anyway or finally watched them, wondering why I ordered it in the first place. Needless to say,  I wasn’t capitalizing on my investment. I was losing money.

Now that I can get Netflix on my Android phone, I’m happy to give up the discs. No more hassle. No more wasting cash. I’m getting my money’s worth out of my subscription, paying just for what I use. Not a bad thing, especially if it keeps costs down. Bring it on, Netflix!

The Heat Factor

I’ve read that during heat spells, crime goes up. Makes perfect sense. I know the heat has made me cranky and irritable Though I am happy to say that it has not led me down the dark alley of domestic assault or random violence. I simply sweat it out–literally!

Yesterday, Minnesota had the dubious distinction of breaking its heat index record with a sweltering 119 degrees. I don’t need to travel to the Brazilian rainforest to satisfy my curiosity. I’ve lived it. To get through these days of ungodly high temperatures and dew points, I turn to literature for some help.

During the summer, I like to paint winter scenes. I do some of my best blizzard paintings when it’s over 90 degrees. Likewise, books transport me to cooler temperatures and provide relief. My choice for relief is Sheridan Le Fanu’s, “Uncle Silas,” his classic macabre mystery novel. The opening scene is set in November on one of those nights you can only think of cuddling in front of a fire but you’re still cold. That’s the image I want now as the temperature soars. I want to feel cold.

Fortunately, tomorrow is supposed to bring relief. In the meantime, I’ll lock the gun cabinet and hope it passes quickly.
