Be Prepared
Sometimes you just have to step back a bit and take a look. As I wrapped up my mystery, a bit of reality kicked in. How would the wife of the murdered man do with his life insurance money? Would she take off or would she stick around to avoid suspicion?
It reminded me of the movie, “Double Indemnity”. Barbara Stanwyck tipped her hand when she questioned Fred MacMurray about life insurance quotes. “What about accident insurance?” she asked. Why don’t you just ask for funeral insurance while you’re at it?
All these thoughts led me to consider motives and what money does to people. Sure, insurance is a good thing, but it certainly takes me to some dark places. So, I almost have to laugh when I see a money or read a book in which the insurance money is the motivating factor. Really now, did you actually think that you’d get away with it?
Honoring Our Heroes
This week is a time to honor our heroes, the men and women who protect us from evil and terror. Join me and thanking our nation’s police during National Police Week.
I have to admit to being appalled by recent events suggesting that the police force is dishonorable in Arizona. These are the people who are on the front line of crime. It is not a pretty place. They deal with the drug addicts, the felons, the wife beaters, the child abusers each and every day. They deal with the dredges of society, many on a repeat basis. They do the job that no one else wants to do all out of a calling to serve the people. Yet, out-of-staters call to question the job these everyday heroes perform.
I applaud the work that our police officers do. I can sleep safely in my home at night. I know that if me or a family member is harmed, the police will help. How many would face a carjacker head on and defend the law as recently happened in Minnesota? Who else will deal with the drunks and the dope addicts time and again? Who else will face evil head on in a fight for justice? Who among us has that depth of courage and commitment?
Don’t malign these men and women who seek to bring justice to the country. They are our heroes and deserving of our respect.
One Thing You Want to Get Caught Doing
There are, granted, several things in which you probably would prefer not to be caught doing. However, reading is not one of them. Welcome to National Get Caught Reading Month!
Reading, I believe, is something in which you need to stay in practice, especially today. You learn to get information quickly and move on rather than savoring it. Life becomes a series of quick bites rather than a meal you linger over. National Get Caught Reading Month reminds you of the pleasure of enjoying a story well told, of getting caught up in the moment. Embrace it.
Save Your Back—Correct Posture Month
As a writer, I’m certain that you are probably faced with this issue from time to time—how to stay comfortable in one position for hours on end. Welcome to Correct Posture Month!
As an adult, I’ve had to take my own posture seriously. No more were there nuns telling me to straighten up. Don’t slough! Correct posture is not just about saving your back, though it does help. It’s about relieving symptoms of acid reflux disease.
Poor posture causes your internal organs to tighten up, increasing the likelihood of an attack. If you find yourself with a vague weird stomach feeling, you’re probably aggravating your acid reflux disease. I’m not talking about a bad plot twist, but rather a twist in your gut.
Good desk chairs are expensive, but there is an alternative that is both inexpensive and will help strengthen your back. For $80, you can get an exercise ball chair. It relieves stress on your spine, helping your back tension dissolve away. Since its use strengthens your back, you help protect yourself against back fatigue and injury.
Bear in mind that as with any change, your body will need to adapt to using a ball versus a regular chair. After a few days, you’ll find that your back is getting stronger and better supporting your upper body. If you don’t want the chair set up, try an exercise ball alone to gain the same benefits.
If you work at a desk all day, taking care of your back is an investment in your overall job satisfaction. Take the time to improve your posture to avoid unnecessary back pain.
